Mesophase pitch is a highly aromatic, liquid-crystalline precursor produced by heat-treating refined coal tar pitch to induce molecular alignment. Because of its ordered structure, mesophase pitch is widely used to manufacture high-performance carbon fibers with superior tensile strength and high thermal conductivity.
